Through the lens of chronic stress
Through the lens of chronic stress
We live in a world full of stimulation. Phones, digital billboards when we have just popped into the city. Tons and tons of email marketing, all trying to grab our attention. Work pressures where it’s all about performance. The list could go on. We all know it impacts our stress levels and lots of our time and attention dedicated to managing it all. But what about the scrolling, that irrestable pull of your phone?
We went to the theatre last week in the circles, so could see down on everyone below. It was shocking just how many people spent the break on their phones - not chatting in person to those with them. I am not exempt from the pull, but not at the theatre, when we are out out. So let’s get curious....
What is it you hope to find in the scrolling?
What are the key moments you go there (is it that loo stop, or when bored, or you are avoiding someone or something - we all have our trigger points!!)
Most importantly how does it make you feel? For me my neck aches, I feel a bit shut down and spacey, my body feels very tense if I do it for too long. I have noticed a real difficulty putting a stop to it, even when I notice it does not feel good. So how do we make changes with a system designed to hook us, pull us in over and over and increases the stress hormones within.
Get curious with what helps you reduce phone stress:
Know it is not your fault, but that you can put in pauses with the time you spend on it - even boldy turn it off for set periods of time!!
In the past when we were out, we were unavailable; culturally now there are expectations that we will be instantly available. How would
it be to let loved ones know you want some phone free time and its ok they do not need to send the police round to check if you are ok !!
Just because you have always had this constantly on relationship with your phone, does not mean it always has to be this way. What are the things you would like to introduce to reduce phone stress?
